#SPARC21 – Spring 2021 Awards

No set of Regional Conferences would be complete without our Regional Awards, and we’re delighted to say they’re back for the spring series of Regional Conferences 2021.

We’ve had a bit of a rejig this year, with new categories, so make sure you’ve had a read of all the criteria, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us on events@spajournalism.com.

Best Publication (all regions): This award recognises the best student publication in the region and shall take into account their overall relevance to their student community, the quality of content they produce, and the impact of their work. Submission details: Include a two-page A4 document of supporting evidence.

Outstanding Commitment (all regions): This award recognises outstanding commitment of an individual to their publication over the previous year, going above and beyond the call of duty. Submission details: Include a supporting statement of up to 500 words.

Best Journalist (all regions): This award rewards consistently exceptional content produced by an individual for their publication. It will take into account the breadth of work, impact on the intended audience and the quality of journalism produced. Submission details: Include a portfolio of three pieces and a supporting statement of 300 words (please upload as a single file, clearly stating the nominee’s name and your publication).

Best Newcomer Publication (all regions): This award recognises the best new student publication in the region. Publications must be EITHER less than three years old at the time the awards close or a member of the SPA for no longer than a year. It will take into account quality of content, relevance to the student community, and the impact of their work. Submission details: Include a two-page A4 document of supporting evidence.

Best Irish or Northern Irish Political Piece (Ireland and Northern Ireland only): This award recognises insightful political reporting from publications from the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. It will take into account the quality of analysis, timeliness and relevance to the region. Submission details: One piece and a supporting statement of 400 words (please upload as a single file).

Best Scottish Political Piece (Scotland only): This award recognises insightful political reporting from publications from Scotland. It will take into account the quality of analysis, timeliness and relevance to the region. Submission details: One piece and a supporting statement of 400 words (please upload as a single file).

Best Welsh Language (Wales only): This award recognises outstanding journalism, of any genre, written in the Welsh language. Credit will be given to pieces which focus on student or university issues, or issues that have cultural significance surrounding the Welsh language within the student sphere. Submission details: Two pieces in any genre and a supporting statement of 300 words (please upload as a single file).

Eligibility criteria

You or your student publication must be a current member of the SPA, and the work must have been published between 8 November 2019 and 22 January 2021. Please submit a single document per category and clearly state your publication name (and the name of the nominee where applicable). Please keep in mind your last submission will be final and further submissions within the same category will overwrite any previous entries.

Submissions are due by 23:59 on Friday 22 January 2021.
