Media Law Masterclass with Cate Brown
We're pleased to bring you the second SPA workshop of the 2024/25 academic year: a media law masterclass with Cate Brown!
As part of our Student Journalism 101 series, this workshop will teach you the basics of media law, covering key topics you might encounter in your student newspapers, including defamation to copyright.
Cate is an investigative journalist and filmmaker — and a qualified, non-practising lawyer.
Following a career practising law, she moved into journalism in 2016. Cate has bylines with all the major national newspapers, and has reported, directed and produced films for investigative strands such as Channel 4 Dispatches, BBC Eye and BBC Panorama (most recently producing the exposé The Abercrombie Guys: The Dark Side of Cool).
Her legal background helps to get contentious stories over the line and — alongside journalism — Cate consults in media law and regulation, training journalists and TV commissioners on how to navigate issues such as defamation, privacy and reporting restrictions.
We highly recommend this session for all student journalists, whether you're a fresh-faced writer or a returning reporter, so you can know your rights when you encounter complex legal scenarios.
Make sure you register by getting a free ticket so we know you're coming and can send you the link!
If you have any questions please contact the Training & Opportunities Officer Joe McFadden via email (training@spajournalism.com) or DM us on social media.
Hope to see you all there!
