SPA x Reset UK: Working with Charities webinar
As part of our Student Journalism 101 series, we're pleased to bring you the third SPA workshop of the 2024/25 academic year: a webinar with our new sponsors ResetUK!
Inevitably in your work as a journalist, you’ll be approached by charities, local and national,
with information about campaigns they want you to publicise – and ways in which you are
offered the opportunity to help change the narrative around important and crucial narratives
in the world today.
This session will look at how you can engage with charities and key campaigns to bring them to your audience. How do you also ensure that you’re engaging best practice when you come into contact with any vulnerable group as a result of these sorts of stories?
ResetUK will give you an overview of the process of engaging with charities and campaigners which will hopefully enable you to feel more confident about some of the key issues involved in stories with a focus on rights.
What will the session be about?
- The idea of changing the narrative – why should you be part of that process
Introduction to the fact that local press (of which university newspapers are a part) are
more trusted than mainstream media - The benefits of connecting with local and national charities and education spaces
beyond the university - The landscape of campaigning – and top tips for relationship building – and how to
engage and use the resource of the press release - Issues of co-production – working with people with lived experiences
- Leading with a rights-based approach to journalism
- Case study of good ways to change the narrative - community-led welcome projects
- Discussion space about what a good campaign story looks like & around the pitfalls and
dangers inherent in some of these areas
